Guitar legend Cary Park releases “You Matter To Me” (SINGLE)

It’s been a decade since his last solo album, but don’t let the length of time fool you when it comes to guitarist Cary Park’s new record Cary Park 2 (StarPointe Records). The wait has been worth it – the first track released is “You Matter To Me”, a deeply personal revelation. Park, one of the most sought after studio session and touring guitarists, has that it factor going for him.

A proud champion of the Southern California sound, Park’s guitar resume reads like a who’s who of adult contemporary, Americana and country music. Among Park’s many collaborations are working alongside Bruce Hornsby, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Deana Carter (Park is the guitarist on her No. 1 hit “Strawberry Wine”), Randy Meisner, Chuck Pyle, Boy Howdy, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina. He’s worked in the television and movie industry as well. His wheelhouse seems to be in the country/rock or roots Americana world. That blend shines through in the guitar riffs in “You Matter To Me”, only with a twist of modernization. Pat Melfi co-wrote “You Matter To Me”.

The chorus “you matter to me in every way that I never thought could be, yes, you matter to me, at the end of every day, I know just one thing, you’re the only thing that matters to me” is quite memorable. It’s melodic and I found myself humming it throughout the day even after one listen. I really centered myself while listening, and this song really almost created a meditation. It’s a song that really should be appreciated by being in the moment, really focusing on the people in your own life that fit this description. He throws out lines like “you show me things” and “the best part of the journey of love” and I liked where he was going with those lyrics, but the chorus is stronger.

Park’s voice is rugged, it’s aged. I’m so appreciative to hear a song that really relies on a singer singing in his natural voice and not some auto tune or a computer enhancement. The more I listened to his song, I felt like he was sage. He was not only singing to the love his life, he was giving advice and showing the world that this, this relationship or this person is all that matters. He has a refined gusto in his voice. I would have liked a bit more melody in his voice, but why do that when you have one of the best guitarists (you!) playing. Leave the melodies and the variances to the guitar. I was hoping for a bit of the bluesy stuff like Bruce Hornsby, but the guitar work is tight. I think that’s what Park did and “You Matter To Me” is better because of the guitar’s orchestration and arrangements. His voice is what it is – it’s not vanilla. He’s not 20. He’s a long time musician with a heart of gold and his guitar is doing the best singing. The it factor is the guitar. “You Matter To Me” is still a lovely ballad of a song.
