We are happy to spend some time today with the artist Heather Thomas. Thank you for taking time to talk with us.
We heard you have new music on the way, is that right? Do you get nervous before you release music or are you more excited?
Both! I’m excited to share the music and that’s probably the driving force for doing all the work and promotion, and I’m also nervous because there are so many things to do and I worry I’ll miss something. But mainly I’m just excited to get new music out!
If you had to – how would you classify your music?
The album has so many different vibes, each song could almost be a different genre, but the first single I’m putting out has a rock Americana sound to me. I sing and play drums at the same time, so people always bring up Levon Helm or Karen Carpenter, although I think it’s mostly because of the singing/drumming combo and not because my songs sound like them!
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
Some of the best concerts I’ve been to are my friend’s shows. I have so many amazing bands and singer songwriter friends and I love to see the people I care about making their art. It’s so special and everyone is so good at what they do! What I like the most about playing live is connecting with the other musicians onstage and being fully in the moment. Music is magic and it’s such a trip to get to experience that with other humans. I also love when folks in the audience are inspired by what we do, I love to hear that someone wants to be a drummer or a singer or performer because of something they saw in us.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?
I have been immersing myself in the Nashville scene and I feel like I’ve learned so much from other drummers around here. The focus on songwriting in this town is very inspiring, and as a drummer I love that I get to help people tell their stories by bringing the beat to life. I’ve made a lot of really cool genuine connections with other musicians out here and I love to see how everyone is growing and meeting the challenges they face. As an artist I’ve been trying to be more consistent about working towards my goal of releasing music and creating content on a more regular basis.
Musically, who are you listening to and enjoying right now?
I have been a big fan of Janelle Monae for a long time and she just put out a new album that I’ve been getting into. I also really love St. Vincent. I always love some Queens of the Stone Age or D’Angelo, those stay in rotation for me.
Final – SILLY! – Question: Which one item of food is always in your refrigerator?
Lately I’ve had kimchi as a staple, also I’ve been making broccoli and kale almost every day, and have been feeling pretty good about eating my greens!
