EMILY RONNA

Super stoked to welcome you Emily! Tell us a little bit more about yourself and how you got on this road or pursuing music. 

Hey thanks, I’m super stoked to be here! My name is Emily, I go by she/they and I’m an emo pop artist based in Nashville. I was originally writing music for other people but when the pandemic happened I think I had a lot of pent up energy and needed another avenue of expression. Someone had to cut all the ridiculous music I was writing and I realized that someone had to be me haha

One thing that I’m always interested in, when I sit down and chat with artists or bands, is when or what their defining moment was that they knew that they wanted to be in music… What was that moment in time for you?

It’s a little corny but it was at an Avril Lavigne concert. I was 12 and since I’m really small I had squeezed my way to the front of the arena and got to watch her entire set from maybe ten feet away. On the way home I was like “yup, that’s it, that’s what I’m doing.”

How involved in the single were you? Do you write all your songs and do you mix and master yourself or do you have an engineer or a producer that works with you?

 I’m a songwriter first and am heavily involved in the writing of all my music. I have close friends that handle all of the production, I get very overwhelmed by it personally, and they engineer, mix and master the songs.

I am personally on a mission to get good music heard by everyone. What is one thing that bothers you the most about trying to come up in the music world today and, do you prefer being underground or, is the mainstream something you strive for?

The thing that bothers me the most is having to compete with label backing. I have so many friends who make amazing music and are also underground but every time they release something are up against singles that are backed by so much money. It’s pretty hard to outdo that, but it also just means we have to be more creative than labels. For that reason mainly I’d love to be more mainstream, just so I know more people have access to me.

One question that I like to ask artists is, how did Covid affect your music in particular and the music scene in your area?

Covid is the reason I’m an artist at all haha the decision came out of boredom, I needed more to do. I live in Nashville, which unfortunately hasn’t taken the pandemic as seriously, so the live music scene relatively stayed the same. Co-writing though was completely different. All of my sessions were over zoom, which by default made me realize I could collaborate with anyone, even people who didn’t live where I lived. That part was very freeing and is still something I do.

I grew up in the 90’s, I listened to everyone from Dr. Dre, to Weezer, to Pink Floyd, Metallica, Cypress Hill and back again. I truly believe that the 90’s were one of the greatest era’s for original music. Which era of music is one of your favorites?

I am so biased but early 2000’s emo. Nothing will ever make me feel as much as that era.
