You have had such a warm welcome as a musician. Fans seem drawn to your music! As an artist attempting to make a connection with audiences, how does the warm reception feel?
Feels like a genuine hug My fans are the ones who keep me motivated and driven, as I make music for all of us.
If you had to – how would you classify your music?
If I had to classify my music, I’d make up my own genres as follows: experimental quirk-pop and psychedelic dream-trap.
My professor highlighted my music as authentic with intentionally imperfect inflections, and I love to embrace idiosyncratic elements that make my tunes unpredictable with creative twists and turns because it adds depth and fascination to my style, while amplifying the truth that perfection is not real (it’s simply a social construct).
Psychedelic dream-trap stems from my quirk-pop. I sometimes blend psychedelic sounds similar to Tame Impala, along with a dreamy ambience and trap beat. We can hear this in my single Immortality from my debut EP Awake & i, as well as from my most recent single release titled GH0$t.
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
I’ve been to so many amazing shows that it’s hard to pick the best one! I absolutely love music festivals, with some of my favorites having been Electric Forest, Bonnaroo and NOS Alive. My favorite part of performing live is getting to experience everyone uniting with positive intentions while uplifts each other with such amazing energy for the love of music – that’s the energy that keeps me going.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?
Over the last year, my music evolved because I started performing live with my backing band, which adds an aura of rock & roll in my sound to jam out to at live shows. You can keep up with my upcoming shows by checking my website www.marliii.me and my Instagram/TikTok @musicwithmarliii
Musically, who are you listening to and enjoying right now?
Lately I have been listening to Bon Iver, St. Vincent, SZA and Tame Impala.
